September Blog Post

On September 22, 2019, I volunteered to help with the clean-up process for the Nola On Tap fundraiser for the Louisiana-SPCA. The SPCA fosters many homeless animals and also helps protect the ones that suffer from neglect and animal abuse. This fundraiser was important to me because I have a dog named Benji. I got him as a puppy in my senior year of college, and he has been with me ever since. I think what the SPCA does for animals just like mine is a wonderful endeavor and deserves all the support in the world. Therefore, I was happy to help move barricades and tents to help make the lives of the selfless men and women that helped make this fundraiser happen a little bit easier.
In class, I have learned about subjects that are very relevant to the LA-SPCA and my dog. The first being anti-parasite medication, which unfortunately I had to purchase on the same weekend that I volunteered due to my dog having a roundworm infection. Luckily, this parasitic infection is relatively common, and I was able to get the medication over the counter, and it worked very well. I thought that this was very coincidental that my dog would get this parasite in the same week that I had a test on these classes of drugs, and I was volunteering for a foundation that helped take care of animals.  We have also learned about animal research in class as well, which is very hard to hear for many people. Fortunately, there is the IACUC which is a committee that is mandated by the NIH and USDA to help protect the animals used for research from inhumane care and testing. One might consider the IACUC to be similar to the LA-SPCA in these aspects.
I have found our course material to be challenging but necessary for helping me succeed in the future. The first module was hard for me due to the lack of experience I had with drug names and drug mechanisms. I also believe that I underestimated the difficulty of this program. In the future, I think I will be much more prepared for the modules and will continue to increase my understanding of pharmacology as a whole. I am very excited to see what the rest of the year holds!
